Our problem has never been guns.
I don’t care if every man, woman and child in America has a hundred guns for each one, guns do not walk into schools and kill people. Remember that story about the man in CHINA (a truly gun-free zone) who killed his wife, then walked into a school and killed students and teachers WITH A KNIFE?
No, the problem is not guns. Long before there were guns, people still killed people. They used axes, saws, the “law,” lies, their hands, rocks, clubs, their political power, their personal strength, knives, rope, anything that would facilitate the process of killing. The problem is our affinity for violence.
The problem is our inherent sin nature. Cain never needed a gun to kill Abel. Cain had his mind set on killing his brother, and not even a conversation with God changed his mind.
A note for those who claim a “close relationship with Christ”: God spoke directly to Cain before the murder. Cain was a believer. He knew God, and the garden, and sin, and his parents’ punishment. But his knowledge was not enough to save him. For those of you who believe your knowledge of Christ is enough to save you from sin, think again. Paul made this point when he said (paraphrased rendition), “Even if I can speak in the language of angels and have all knowledge, and enough faith to move mountains, and spend all my money on feeding the poor, but have not love, I am only so much noise” (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).
The only, let me repeat ONLY, thing that saves you from sin is being REBORN into Christ. Going to church will not save you. Being active in church will not save you. Going on mission trips will not save you. Teaching Sunday school will not save you. Being nice will not save you. Going door-to-door will not save you. Handing out pamphlets will not save you. Memorizing Scripture will not save you. None of the things you do will save you from sin. The ONLY thing that saves is believing IN Christ. That means taking Christ so seriously that you eat, drink, think, even breathe your new life in Christ. Love is key. A person cannot be Christian and hate other humans. Note this, Westboro Christian Church, you who have made a mockery of Christ with your hatred.
A second note on those wanting gun control: back then there were no guns, but there were more than a hundred rocks for every man, woman, and child. There were knives and rope and lies and clubs. There was personal strength, the “law,” and political power. Ever afterward there was war and torture and very inventive ways of killing each other, all without guns.
And there was mental illness. One definition of mental illness is the ability to focus on self rather than on God and on the high regard he has for the people he made. I am quite aware that there are illnesses of the brain caused by chemical imbalances. But I am also aware that most mentally ill people think more often about themselves than they ever do about anything or anyone else.
Because I have a brother who is mentally ill, I know the heartache a family member has when dealing with their sick sibling or child. Their illness affects the whole family. My heart goes out to the mother of Adam Lanza. She not only had to deal with a sick son, but now the aftermath of the results of his illness.
But Adam Lanza was also steeped in sin. And he had no intention of breaking free from it. He had no high regard for others as the created of God, nor for himself as just as precious to God. In other words, Adam Lanza had no tools to fight Satan when Satan lied to him and encouraged this unspeakable violence.
No, by themselves, guns are no more than a tool. It takes sin to turn them into a weapon for evil.
So, Christians, it is now our duty to pray for this nation that is so steeped in sin that it would leave us as helpless before those who would disregard laws no matter how many of them are passed.
Pray, Christians, pray for the salvation of the people of this country. It is our first line of defense against darkness.
Blessings.
